It’s rare to be involved in a fight where a walls, fences, cars, poles… cages are not involved. I can rarely think of a real fight that I have seen (whether on video or in person) where the fighters have not had hard objects around them. Yet sometimes in our training, we ignore the important [...]

Everyone knows that the ancient Roman warriors kicked ass. In fact, the growth of the Roman Empire was just about unstoppable for nearly 500 years. That is, up until 476 AD, when they found themselves fighting the Barbarians who invaded Rome from the Germanic region of Europe. And this time, it was the Barbarians who [...]

When it comes to movies, I’ll the very typical guy. I like people beating each other up. I like guns being fired. I like kicks to the head, mix in some fun grappling techniques, and I’ve having a good time. I also like movies that make me cry like a 12-year old school girl. This [...]

As I watch my students train through their technique and do countless of repetitions of throws, takedowns, defensive striking, weapons [...]

Hey guys, I just got an email from a BJJ practioner in Belgium named Amando. He asked some very interesting questions. I recently heard of the term called “Powerbuilding”. It is basically strength training or powerlifting combined with bodybuilding. There have been some famous weightlifters, most notably Ronnie Coleman who have been called Powerbuilders. For a long time I was lifting in a powerbuilding mindset, but took about 1.5 years off to concentrate on getting fat, then losing all the fat and fighting MMA. Now that I’m good to go, I started getting back into it. I’m lifting with my old buddy “Big Joe” and we’re back in the mix. Hopefully I’ll show you some transformation pics – we’ll see. Along those lines, I found a program that is geared towards Powerbuilding developed by Eliot Hulse. It’s called Lean Hybrid Muscle. Eliot is a professional strongman and well as jacked up! His program is SOLID and we are now using many of the workout concepts and techniques outline. Here’s Elliot talking about Powerbuilding. Check out more of Eliot’s program here at Lean Hybrid Muscle

One of my favorite fighters is Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira – the man is a legend in the Mixed Martial Arts world and is mostly noted for his ground fighting ability, particularly his guard. As you know, the guard is one of the most important and common positions in MMA, grappling, and in a street fight [...]
