Last night at no-gi jiu-jitsu training, we went over the popular flower sweep. This can be done with or without the gi, obviously last night we did it without. Here is a video version of the sweep.

I’m gonna go over his head, grab his neck. This hand is gonna go under and between his legs and I kinda want to get side. Right here, boom, and I’m rolling him up on that leg to the sky. Alright. We’ll do that at a different angle so you can see it. Over, up, this hand goes under between his legs. I’m using the momentum to kick this leg as far as I can over. Kick forward, and using that to come up on top. I’m really heavy. The whole thing with sweeps are that submissions are right there and I usually end up in a more comfortable position for myself.

From my class, here are the key points to remember.

Flower Sweep

Since I have longer legs, I need to create some distance first to get my foot on his hip. I typically would have right hand head control, and left hand wrist control. I maintain my grip on his head and wrist, but you my hips and legs to push him back a little. I can also bait him into creating the space for me by being heavy on his head so he postures up hard.

Once I get my left foot on his hip, I want to pressure his shoulder and arm with my left leg. Keep him close and tight.

I then shoot my right arm under his thigh like a dagger. Make your hand small.

I turn my body to be a 45 degree angle and drive and turn my right leg across his shoulder blade.

From here I drive and hip up with my right leg, and lift with my hand under his thigh to sweep.

Flower Sweep setup to Armbar

Follow steps 1-4 with the sweep, but instead of driving forward, if they don’t protect their arm, swing my left leg over their head.

I can do 1 of two things. If they don’t defend or protect their arm, I take the hand out from underneath their leg, and put it on his elbow and go for the armbar.

If they do defend, I can still sweep from here, and you end up in the armbar position.

Fall at a 45 degree angle towards their head to break the grip, then finish the armbar.

Flower Sweep to Omoplata

Follow steps 1-4 for the flower sweep

When you get to the flower sweep position, they pull their arm out (the one you would attack for an armbar, and leave the other arm behind.

From here, you would attack omoplata. Click here for some Omoplata videos for reference

More Flower Sweep videos

from Grapplers Guide or Jason Scully - Amazing resource.

This is a video of the basic flower sweep done without the gi on. The biggest point is how you go about trapping your opponent’s arm when establishing the sweeping position

What I really like about this video is the simple little armdrag to setup with sweeping position.

Flower Sweep to Omoplata Sweep

Here’s a video showing the transition to the Omoplata at about 1 minute in. We did this in class, yet finished the armbar instead of going for the Omoplata sweep. We’ve trained the sweep from the Omoplata position before, and it works sporadically.
As I continue to play and learn half guard from a beginners perspective, I found this post and video very useful. Like I said, from a beginners perspective, getting underneath in half guard has been the only way I feel like I can be offensive, rather then defensive.

I had a private lesson again with Luigi last night. It was a great lesson, we reviewed some of my problem areas in seated or butterfly guard. When I just have one hook or one foot on my opponent and I’m seated, I have been getting passed very easily. One of the key points was to keep my foot as a hook in the crook of his knee. In my best Brazilian accent - “Monkey Paws, not pudding foot”.

I was having a tendency to put my foot just on the hip, which allowed my opponent to move around and pass very easily. Just putting my foot in the crook, changed a lot of things. I played with this later during a great rolling session and I instantly felt improvement.

Tips for seated and butterfly guard

Hook their knee and control them with your monkey pawed foot. Keep a “live” foot.

Control them with an over or underhook if possible. If you can’t work back to butterfly guard with both feet hooked and sleeve control

Be on your hip and side. If no-gi, skip your butt out a little bit more

Gi Technique series for sweeping in seated guard

Seated guard sweep with underhook and wrist control

hook under the knee with your hoot (assuming left foot)

Tip to the side of your seated knee or the side you have wrist control on (right)

Elevate your hooked foot (left), drive with your underhooked arm (left), and pull with your wrist control (right)

When sweeping, dig and drive with the ball of your (right) foot to get the over.

Here is a video from Rodgrido Gracie going over this sweep.

Opponent stands when you have seated guard variation #1

If you opponent steps up to you, grab your opponents ankle of the leg he stepped up with. (assuming his left foot, my right hand)

Move my right foot to his left hip

Pull with my right hand, push with my right foot. My left foot is still hooked and controlled.

Sweep.

Opponent stands when you have seated guard variation #2

If you opponent steps up to you, swim underneath his leg and foot.(assuming his left foot, my right hand)

Pull his body and weight on top of you

Drive to your left trapping his right leg with your other hand and sweep.

If he does not get swept, push his body away at his hip level and go for a heel hook.

Frustrating Guard Pass used against Luigi in the Worlds

Take my right hand, move it to his left armpit area, my right hand.

Grab the gi in that area, make it tight, and drive it up into him, so he can’t have use of that arm.

Stretch yourself out, and force your body back.

Grab with your left hand his right gi pant near his ankle and lower calf. Grab on the outside of his gi pant.

Break your hips, so you are on your right hip.

Force his right leg down with the gi control, and step over your left leg.

VERY IMPORTANT: trap his ankle of the leg you just passed with your right instep. I have been trying to pass the guard without this. I guess this is a big big big error.

Keep the control on the leg, and put BIG pressure down on him with your right shoulder.

Missing a thought…. he gave me another detail here (I forgot notebook). But basically you keep control with the hand, pressure him, and transition to side.

No-Gi Seated Guard to Triangle Choke

You have an underhook in seated guard, but your opponent pummels and tries to get an underook

As he does this, you take control with an overhook

Also, as he does this, take the other arm (my right, his left) that you have wrist control on and feed it quickly to your overhooked hand so you are hooking his crossed arm on his tricep. You should have control of both arms.

For this technique, you are forcing the hand you are crossing to go between your legs.

From here, sit back, and put your right leg over his shoulder and body to start setting up the triangle.

Get into the triangle position and then bump your hips to bring across the other arm.

Finish the triangle choke.

Notes: I really liked this setup and finish. There was amazing control with you had the overhook with both arms trapped. The only slight difficulty I was facing was bringing his posted arm across. But after asking Luigi, you have to do this, when you are being pummeled. So it all has to happen at once.

No-Gi seated guard to taking the person’s back

Refer to steps 1-3 of previous technique

Instead of taking his arm and putting it between your legs, take the arm and pull it across your body, so you are still going to end up controlling both of his arms.

From here, it’s easy. Push their head and body with your free arm (right) down.

You left foot is already inside of their body hooked. Drive this foot in-between their legs, and transition to their back

Notes: Again, I really this setup for attacking. Very dominant and powerful position. I need get some video on this.

I also got a new Koral Gi. Nice gi, but a little toooo big and pre-shrunk. Going to have to get it altered.

21 Tips to Improve Your Grappling Game

    By: Jason Scully
Goal oriented training Have a specific technique or area of focus for each rolling session. For example, I will come into training thinking "Today I am going to work on passing the butterfly guard". You may even want to let your training partners know this and start in those positions.
Consistent Training
Make BJJ a priority in your life, training 3-5 times a week EVERY week. It’s no coincidence that the best guys in class also have the best attendance.
Set a schedule for yourself and don’t let anything that isn’t really major interrupt it. Some guys get good really quick, but the best guys have all put in countless hours to get there. You will never see your game improve as fast as it should if you are missing classes or weeks of training.

Take advantage of your training partners
Make a mental note of who has the best guard, takedowns, passing, pins, or escapes. Then work with them, allowing them to use their strengths. This will highlight your mistakes and help you monitor your progress. Once you can consistently overcome their strong points then you know you are seriously improving. I never pull guard against someone if I know they have a slick bottom game, I want to be on top.
Study everyone else’s game - When you aren’t sparring study your teammate’s games and try to pick up their effective moves. Go over it in your head as they spar. Think about when you would be able to use that move, or how you would counter it. Ask them what little adjustments they make so that the technique works better.
Ask your instructor questions
All too often I see brown and black belts teach class and ask, "Any questions or things you guys want to work on?" and everyone is SILENT. Always have a question in mind, unless you are an absolute phenom there will always be a position where you don’t feel 100% confident.
Try new things
I always use white belts for this. I will take a move or setup that I haven’t tried yet and try to pull it off on the beginners. This works well because if you are still unsure about parts of it, you most likely will not be able to pull it off at all on the more advanced guys. For example, I’m trying to learn the twister right now, so whenever I roll with white belts or new blues that is what I go for. It also helps because it makes rolling with those much less skilled than yourself challenging.
Work on a new area until you feel it is one of your strengths, then move on to another. Work on keeping your guard, for example, until it is almost impossible for any others close to your level to pass, and really difficult for someone advanced to get by. Then add your sweeps. Once you are sweeping blues easily and higher belts on occasion, move to subs from the guard, etc…
Individual attention
Privates with your instructor work wonders. Roll with them or have them watch you roll with someone who usually get the better of you, then have them point out areas you need to improve upon or blatant mistakes you are making.
Train at different gyms
I realized that having new perspectives helped me greatly. Also, the experience of rolling with guys you don’t know anything about will make your moves much sharper. This is especially true if you are the most technical one in your academy, don’t fall into the "big fish in a small pond syndrome".
Compete as often as possible
Under the stress of competition the true nature of your skills come out. Also it helps to let you know where you stand in the larger scheme of things by giving you a realistic look at where you stand against other guys with the same belt level.
Teach new guys
If you can get a pure beginner to do a move 100% accurately then you know that you have it down. It is good practice to make sure you are aware of each little detail that makes a technique work.
Roll until you are exhausted at every training session
I see many guys pack their bags and go home when they have barely worked up a sweat. I always try to train until my instructors tell me they have to lock up and go home. Even if I’m so tired that I’m getting my ass kicked by someone of lower rank, the experience of training when you have no strength left will vastly improve your game both mentally and physically.
Your cardio is a technique. You may know a lot, but you won’t be able to express it well if you are worried that you are going to run out of air. You can really open up your game and keep pressure on your opponent if your lungs can handle the constant movement and explosiveness.
Train in inferior positions
Allow your training partners to get your back, pass your guard, or mount you. Don’t let them know that you are allowing them to have the position (I say this because if they think they got it legitimately they tend to get excited and really work for the finish, which is good for you). Stay in the inferior position and work on simply avoiding the submissions, then work your escapes. This will help you feel comfortable in even the worst situations, which in my opinion is a major difference between an inexperienced grappler and a experienced one. Have a good balance between top and bottom
If I tap someone from my guard, then I will make it my goal to pass and tap them from side control during the next roll. If I tap someone from the top, I will pull guard the next time. When I was a new blue belt I had a decent guard and I would tend to neglect my top game while rolling because I could tap most people from the bottom, it was an ego thing I had to get over and it held me back some. Now when I roll I always alternate between top and bottom, not allowing myself to neglect either area.
Find someone who can manhandle you
Never back down from sparring the toughest guys in class. Each sparring session, put your ego aside and roll with the best guy you can find, also spar with heavy guys, quick guys, and guys with unlimited endurance. As a beginner or intermediate grappler, you are under no pressure to be brilliant, so use that time to open up your game and test the positions you know against guy who know what they are doing.
Drill things to death
Take about ten minutes before or after you roll to just work on the techniques you’ve been shown over the past few days of class. Also try to take one day a week and make it your drilling day. That day spend at least a half hour - 45 minutes just repeating techniques and sequences over, and over and over. It’s boring and I hate doing it, but it helps a great deal.
Although it is boring, many of the best guys I know devote a portion of every training session to drilling a basic movement with a partner.
Specialize
Find positions that fit your game and work them in sparring until you can rely on them against just about anyone. For example, there was a time when my all-around game was weak, but I knew that I had one sweep from my half-guard that I could catch just about anyone with. Didn’t matter what level they were, I knew I would sweep them if I got the underhook in the half-guard. You need a technique like that from every position to go to against tougher guys. You’ll start to learn set-up for those specialized techniques and areas and then it will keep branching off from there which will then lead to you developing a game/style for yourself.
Share your tricks
Share your tricks with anyone who asks. As they get better, they will be more competition for you. When you have tough competition, you will inevitably get tougher to beat yourself.
Use training sessions as a time to learn not win
Think of a move you want to pull off and the situation that would require it. When training, the sparring sessions should be more about pulling off that move/moves than winning the match. To me, it’s more important if you pull off a move you’ve been wanting to implement in your game then tapping your teammate in class. It’s a great feeling finally getting a move you’ve been wanting for a long time, even if the end result is you getting tapped. Tourneys are about playing your best game and playing to win; class is all about experimenting.
Visualization
Training isn’t just on the mat. It is also in the mind. When you learn a technique that you feel works for your game or you’ve been having trouble pulling off a certain move. Think about how you can make your technique better and practice in your head. Visualize your movements and try to feel and react in your mind what it is you can and will do to beat your opponent. I also recommend a book called "The Mind Gym" to aid in your mental training.
Be Technical
Just like stated before practice isn’t the time to go full force and try to maul your partners. It is a time to learn and improve. True there are times in class where you do want to play to win. I would say maybe 1 out of every 5 classes, but for the most part you want to improve and become as technical as possible. It is important to focus on good technique first and then add your attributes. It will make things much easier in the long run. If you feel your self muscling out of position or using your speed instead take a moment to stop and thing what the proper technique it is you can use to accomplish your goal. If your not sure you can always "ASK QUESTIONS". Remember this the more technique you use the less energy you waste.
Don’t Ever Forget The Basics
A lot of people get wrapped up in the newest techniques that are coming out. While some are very good and some are not. It is also extremely important that you don’t forget about the basics. If you watch any major tournament you will see that most matches are won by using mostly the basics. If you are not proficient at the basics you will never be able to properly expand upon your skills and add any new techniques and make them work easily for you.
Train Takedowns
I know BJJ is a ground fighting art but too many schools neglect the importance of the stand-up game. Most altercations start from the feet and ALL tournaments start on the feet. Especially when you start to move up the ranks and as time goes on you will see that more and more people are getting comfortable with there takedown abilities.
When you are the one that dictates where the fight is going to be and when and how it will go to the ground that is a big confidence booster. If you are the one to take your opponent down chances are you not only physically gave yourself an advantage but you did mentally to, because you felt confident on your feet and you startled your opponent because you just dictated the fight from the beginning. It is always nice to be able to stand in front of your opponent and not be afraid of getting taken down and resorting to pulling guard.

Ground-and-pound is a ground fighting tactic consisting of taking an opponent to the ground using a takedown or throw, obtaining a top position, and then striking the opponent. Ground-and-pound is also used as a precursor to attempting submission holds.

This style is used by wrestlers or other fighters well-versed in defending submission
holds and skilled at takedowns. They take the fight to the ground, maintain a grappling position, and strike until their opponent submits, is knocked out or is cut so badly that the fight cannot continue. Although not traditionally considered a conventional method of striking, the effectiveness and reliability (as well as recently-developing science) of this style is proven. Originally, most fighters who relied on striking on the ground were wrestlers, but considering how many fights end up on the ground and how increasingly competitive today’s MMA is, strikes on the ground are becoming more essential to a fighter’s training. Ground and Pound first came into the spotlight by 2000 Pride GP winner Mark Coleman.

Skills needed for Ground and Pound are…

strong wrestling and takedown skills

Good ground control and base

Powerful ability from ground position

Endurance to keep striking hard and fast

Good jiu-jitsu submission defense

Tips for effective Ground and Pound

The Takedown

Wrestling takedowns and throws are necessary.

Work on high percentage takedowns

Leg Trips, Double-leg, Single-leg takedowns:

Drill MMA takedowns with partner throwing punches at you

Your partner just throws punches while you work for the takedown

Just wrestle – only go for takedowns when you spar. Once someone goes down, start again

Positioning on the ground

Next most important aspect of ground and pound training is gaining and controlling top position

Work on just controlling the person in knee on stomach, side mount and mount. Have your opponent try to escape while you just try to keep him down

In guard, work on keeping your posture up and high. Don’t let your opponent control your arms or head. Work on creating distance to strike.

Striking on the ground

Once you are comfortable controlling your opponent, work on striking and transitioning from different positions. If you are in side control, work on transitioning from side control to mount and striking in all positions.

Work on trapping opponents arms in side control and mount so you are able to strike without them blocking. Matt Hughes does this to effectively.

When striking from guard, work combinations to the body and head. Don’t just be a head hunter. Striking the body can cause a lot of damage.

I am sure you have heard me mention the name Luigi Mondelli 8 million times over the past few months. He is an American Top Team 2nd degree black belt, and one of the most technical and nicest Super Heavyweight BJJ champions in the world. He is a 4x PanAm Champion as well as an accomplished instructor at Best Way Jiu-Jitsu in Connecticut.

Luigi will be competing in the BJJ World Championships in the beginning of June. The tournament will take place on June 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in California State University Long Beach, Long Beach, California, USA. The World Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2008 will be organized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

This is the official, biggest and most prestigious championship in the world. Athletes from all over the world compete in this event. In the last edition over 1,000 fighters signed up to fight in the Worlds.

The worldwide media coverage is ample. Magazines such as Gracie Magazine, Tatame, Martial Arts World, Ultimate Grappling and others are always present as well as sports channels (ESPN, SporTV, Premiere Combat/Brazil and others ).

Luigi is coming off of a big win at the Pan-American Championship recently and is poised to do very well at the Worlds. He is looking to raise some money to help him get there and compete.

Expenses:
Air Fare: US$ $412 + $28 taxes & fees = $440 per person
Lodging US$ 285.00
Car Rental: US$ 88.00 + US$ 60.00 insurance = US$ 148.00
Registration Fee: US$ 105.00
Total: US $890.00

I would take it as a personal favor and Luigi would be very thankful if some of you would be willing to throw in a some cash to help Luigi get there. If you are looking for something in return, such as a link to your website, a blog post, etc. Let me know.

Thank you, and I appreciate it!
