They open as well as (better than for the most part) any switchblade I've handled (not that I know anyone who owns a switchblade
), but if you don't like mechanical opening, I'd suggest one of the CRKT blades that flip open with a thumb stud. They're made of quality steel and have good locks, and while I don't own one, everyone that I know that does loves it.
