| Troy was a good film for me but I felt let down by the poor duel scenes. The opener was the first sign, the bit where Achilies runs up and spears the big guy in the clavical I thought was ridiculous...but the story was told quite well I thought.
What I would love is a 3 hours+ Chingis (Ghengis) Khan biography epic which covered the events from his fathers death upto his own.

| Tory's 2 biggest problems:
1. Orlando Bloom. It's not that he's a bad actor, just that he cannot hold the weight of certain roles. He's getting better though.
2. The Illiad is very much an ancient account of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and that aspec of the story of Troy was nonexistant in the film. I think the film would have been much better if it had been directed by some who could include that element: Ridley Scott and Edward Zwick come to mind.
In regards to zefff's Ghengis Khan movie:
That's a great idea! I'm totally stealing it lol!

| I think he's confused the Iliad with the Odyssey...

| "Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character." - Jonathan Shay.
That's where I first picked up the element of PTSD in the Illiad. That is not to say that PTSD is purely what the Illiad is about, just one of many parts of the story - one which if better explored would have (IMHO) much justice to the film Troy.
As far as going into the specifics, well I have to refer you to the book. I read it quite a while ago so the details are not fresh.
Regarding the Odyssey: What a great story! Absolutely about the trials the Gods put on Odysseus not out of anger, or to prevent him from getting home, but rather to give him the necessary time to rediscover himself after 10 years of war (compareable to the time soldiers spent in boats after World War II on their way home - trading stories, sharring experience). Ok, I'm going on a rant here.... (and I recognize the debatable points on that interpretation as well - again, just one of many elements to the story).

| Troy was about how gay Brad Pitt can be.
300 will be the first movie I see in theatres this year, unless The Number 23 comes out first.

| Just a couple of comments...anyone have an idea why Letters from Iwo Jima succeeded where Flags of Our Fathers did not....also, is Letters guilty of the post-war Japanese edict of sanitizing the Tojo and Hirohito era to maintain the homocentric and egocentric part of the Japanese ego? Sorry, I was married to a Filipina for 8 years whose grandmother was forcibly made a sex slave during the war. Also, re the Iliad and the Odyssey, with all due respect to my brother Wushu, I see a little bit of modernism creeping into what essentially is a Greek tragedy without an illustrious chorus. The Odyssey, to me, was the much better exposition of a man's attempt to reintroduce himself into the civilized norm. If you note, in the movie Troy, Odysses was portrayed as the mental side of both Achilles and Agamemnon. Do not forget he offended Neptune and that was the main reason for his 10 year old wanderings.
Maybe I am stretching it here, but I see great parallel between Odysses and the Samurai in Seven Samurai and Ran, particularly the fatefulness of Toshiro Mifune. The 300 is simply the glorified tale of the attempt by supposedly 300 Spartans to hold off 1 million Persians, similar to the Maccabbees on the mountain near the Golan Heights in Judea.
Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh...will be interesting to see their chemistry re Jackie and Michelle! I am still waiting for the promised Jet/Jackie movie that is in script right now! I would love to see Donnie Yen play one of the head villians in that! | | | | Senior Member Purple Belt Join Date: Dec 1969 Posts: 797

| Stas, that is just gross.....although Jolie probably liked his nekkedness earlier with the Apollo worshiper. Personally, watching the series Rome on HBO is pretty cool to me.
By the way, if anyone watches Heros, does it not seem a little bit like a Greek tragedy with the gods playing around again? If you notice, there seems to be alot of mythology in both movies and TV, especially exploring the concepts of honor in war....relevant given today's world events? | | | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
