Default Do you think i've lost it (not quite as sinister as it sounds.lol)?

Hey guys,

I've had enough. Lythargic, more money or detrimental to work and injury or not, i just am sick of not doing anything. I've looked at acouple of the martial arts the have on offer here, and i am going to try them if it kills me (i'm writing this just incase i start thinking better of it...think of it as insurance to get me to the class.lol.).

I've picked out a few to try, wing tsun, eskrima and zhaun shu kuan (if not, there is alway aikido, which is another i might try out, and, i think most of the time the first session is free, so, i may as well try them all for that reason). The latter i was attracted to by the instructors credentials, the fact that it is supposedly similar to kickboxing, with a bit extra, and of course, that all improtant, long awaited free sparring after every class (yippee!)

Well, that's all folks.lol.

Do you think i'm being wise?

Zhaun shu Kuan? Similar to kickboxing, with extras? Wait...are you talking about sanda/sanshou?

Indeed...similar to kickboxing with extras, like locks and throws. The teacher is a kickboxing champ, i lost out when i was in Cyprus in the worlds due to my illness, i'm hoping that, if all goes well, that he might be a way to help have a chance again at going into something like it, as well as learn a few extra things, and satisfy my urge to get my legs flailing around again, and sparring...oh, ive missed that.lol.

Well, sanda/sanshou is a perfectly good choice if you're into hard-impact martial arts with lots of sparring. Wing Chun and kali escrima are both arts demanding a lot of technical sophistication and precision. If you haven't had any experience in similar things before, you may find the transition challenging.

Doctors will always tell you not to do things that could injure you- a sports doctor on the other hand has the job of getting the athelete back in the game as fast and safely as possible.

The first time I dislocated a shoulder the doctor told me I need to quit, the sports doctor had me back and actively participating in no time.

San shou? Good choice gazelle!

IIRC there is excellent Judo available in Coventry. Infact there is a wealth of schools and talent in many arts there...or there was back in the 90's anyway.

Yes Infact, i know someone that goes, though i haven't seen her in a while. Grappling is how i busted my side, though, which is why i'm weary of doing it again...i enjoyed it, mind...i could do that for quite a while because my mind is occupied all the time (and, i guess the guy was going easy on me).

Technical precision, huh? i do mathematics lol. If it ain't precise, you don'T get marks.lol. I know, a little different with martial arts...i don't think i'd find that a problem though, if anything else it would help 'tune myself' a bit, which is exactly part of the fun in doing it.

Why good choice? At least they let you take grades whenever, it seems like you don't neccesarily have to take earlier grades, which means less money. The 'less money' is exactly why i am waiting at the moment, you see, i want to see if i can arrange trying a few lessons before paying for the sports centre membership, which is something i need to get into the place where they train. I really can'T afford to spend money unless i'm sure it's worth spending at moment. It'S only because of bursaries and loans that i'm surviving this year.

Man, i wish they had sports doctors in the NHS.lol. My bf's doctor in Belgium is a sports one, he's supposed to be very good, actually nearly went to see if i could see him whilst i was over there.

I really hope it does work out, and i read that this club likes getting people to compete, though they also encourage full contact, which i am not doing, i really do need my neurons!

As for the name, i have no idea, i'm just spelling it how they do!

I wish they wouldn't schedule tests in the afternoon, i always go extremely tired around then, from being up and about all morning.

If your still talking about San Da, be careful. In UK at least, it is not a level playing field. Ask yourself what you want out of it. Here, most of it is blagged, generic shite, warped kungfu to appeal to a new generatin of suckers - crappy, low level kickboxing.

If you seperated your ribs grappling then you werent doing it right. Going crazy or "spazzing out" is a natural response for n00bs while sparring and if you keep it up you will quickly learn from your mistakes and relax to develop sensitivity. Ive done it myself, its very easy to over-exert especially while working with a heavy, strong guy.

Good luck.

Going crazy? No, i don't think i did that. The guy did some technique on me, he gripped my right hand, and hand me laying on him, his feet at my hips, stretching my side (at that time, it didn't feel like he was stretching too strongly) i tried to wriggle out, then, he re-manouvered slightly, not letting off the slack, and ends up scraping his foot down my side, whilst stretching it, and tightening up a little more. That's what did the damage, i couldn't even tap out immediately because my other hand was occupied. Admittedly, maybe i should have just tapped out when he was puling my side, but, i'm stubborn and want to try as much as i can to get out before i do so.
