| Wrapping your sticks Do you like to wrap your sticks? If so, with what? I was thinking of wrapping mine with white "hockey" tape on one end for grip.

| No! Your hands will never grow strong that way. Adjust yourself rather than adjusting the stick. Persevere without and in the end you will be in a better position than all the others who use tape.

| I just feel that my hands are slipping too much because of the sweat. What about wrapping them in the beginning of my training to better work on the technique and then later taking the wrap off once I have the basics and start working advanced techniques?

| Don't wrap your sticks. A little bit of tape on the ends when they start to splinter if you can't afford new sticks but no tape for grip. | | | | Super Moderator Black Belt 5th Dan

| If you hold your guard up the sweat will run down your arm instead of into your palm!
The technique is all in how you hold the stick, not just your arm and wrist but the fingers and thumb, palm and heel of the the hand.
...wait one sec! You do have proper sticks yes and not the thin, laquered ones with a fancy, fired pattern? Nothing wrong with those for training (even though I dont like them) but give yourself the best start and get natural rattan with the nodules still intact.I think they call them Bahi sticks. You dont have to get the broad heavy ones, thin ones are good. But if you look around you can get these ones which are dark brown with the natural ridges and treated in some way but dont have the mega-shine laquer.
At the end of the day a stick is a stick though. Practice with different types of stick each day is best. Different length, weight, diameter and surface finish. That will make you better than your partners!
Actually, now I think about it - maybe you could try a light sanding of the laquer to take some off??? TBH I would lose those little fired sticks though and go for natural.

| They're regular lightweight rattan. Maybe I'll try to sand them a little just to see if that adds a bit of grip. My hands seem to sweat more than normal so.....I just don't want to lose grip and send the stick flying into someone by accident. On purpose maybe....but not by accident.

| not too tight though, as it may cause too much tension in your hands/arms and could inhibit with your speed and felxibility with strikes and lockings. your hands would blister first, then calouses would appear... precious "battlescars" in the dojo. And then your hands would get very familiar with training with sticks... | | | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
