This is true. At best videos and books are tools that can be helpful in assisting with your training. You need a person who knows what they are doing to be there to guide you along the way and tell you what you are doing right and wrong. A good school is also great for self defense and fighting training, which is something that is best to do with a partner on your level or a teacher. So, again, I think a school is the best way to go.
In fact, if you can spend money on all the videos and books you will need to begin to train, I can almost guarantee you that you can find a teacher for that same amount who can train you once a week. The key is to really do your homework. The Internet is the perfect place to start, and I would also go around to schools in your area and begin speaking with the main Instructors. Tell them you are anxious to learn, and let them know your situation. I have found that there are some instructors who are willing to work with your financial situation if you are serious and willing to compromise. Usually, these schools also just so happen to be the hardest and best schools for training as well (in my experience.) Good luck and let me know how it goes.
