Don't you usually chiburi(sp?) (as opposed to wiping) after cutting with the sword?

Could be the mistake of an untrained observer. Or, the man just wanted a quick clean blade after killing. Practice and art are often quite different.

No, that was a John Stevens book, and a translation of a story at that.

Given the types of firearms used at the time, seeing a muzzle flash and moving is concievable. The whole legend part comes as aikido people like me start giving the story more credence than is needed.
