Default Self Training

Ok, some of you know that the army called me up, and Im supposed to leave on Oct 2 if I pass medical. Since I have no idea where I'll be stationed, except for iraq, and Im not gonna be near my taijutsu trainin group for probably 2 years and Ill be super lucky if I can find another one wherever Im at. My question is this, and Im also goin to ask my instructor this weekend, in what ways can I advance myself without having instruction or even a partner to give feedback/correction? Alot of what I've seen and done so far is controlling balance and things of a "reactive" nature, hard to describe. But you kinda need a partner to Play with the stuff and see what works and why, and how everything relates etc.

I'd like some training suggestions as to how I could go about advancing myself rather than just working on everything I currently "know", cause Im about that continous self improvement stuff. I got some ideas and plans but I figure maybe people that've been trainin longer in any MA style may have some things I havent thought of yet. Thanks

I'm of the opinion that if your entering a war zone, thats all that should be on your mind.

Otherwise for look up "shugyo" or austere solo training.

Be safe.

I do agree with bamboo you primary duty is to yourself and your fellow soldiers to come home alive. This will become instinctual to you once the shit hits the fan.

I am retired from the military. When I have been deployed under stress I did find some relief in some mindless martial arts drills to relieve my stress. I do not practice the martial art that you do, so I can not tell you what drills I would do. Most practically they need to be something you can do alone. In karate we have kata, I don't know if you do any single person kata in your art but if you do these can be good for your situation. Be careful in your practice, some of your peers may take offence to it and ridicule you. Do it in private if you can. For training equipment take some rubber band type gear. Many things can be done with this and it takes up virtually no space.

Another method is to find a fellow martial artist. Find some common ground between you and develop a work out routine. Don't worry about staying specific to your style at this point, do what you can practically.

God speed to you, and come home soon.

Setsu, while your quest to help find a dojo in Iraq is sincere and honorable, I doubt he's going to have the luxury of taking leave to go and train. He probably has no idea where he's going in Iraq or what conditions he'll be under until he gets there. Unfortuanately, that's the life of a soldier when they're called to duty.

Keep us updated brother and let us know if you pass medical...
