I love the gun defense. "Instead of grabbing the gun, step out of the way the bullet would travel"......duh, no shit sherlock. Instead, I'm going to stop the bullet with my body. And what the fuck is the point of him chasing the guy around with the sword? What he did there was not that skillfull. It wasn't even interesting. The only thing he showed were some basic disarming moves, most of which I already had seen at a local Tang Su Do exhibition.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I saw this clip sometime ago and I can't be bothered to watch it again so this is all from memory, but I think you're missing the point.

Now I'm not a big fan of Hatsumi but, what I think he was trying to illustrate is Bujinkan's basic principles of movement. When he swung the sword at Chris Crudelli, who's a kung fu guy, Crudelli tried to dodge it with big, sweeping movements. Consequently, he got hit more times than not. When Hatsumi did the same exercise, his movements were very small and compact, sometimes crowding the attacker, sometimes opening up enough space to escape, but always aware of where the attacker was.

This body of techniques is known as mutodori and it's usually the first thing you learn at the X-kans, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it teaches you how to get out of the way of a big arse sword, which is always handy, but, more importantly, it teaches you awareness, positioning and economy of motion. It also teaches you the basic footwork that forms the basis of most of ninpo's offensive techniques, eg, the footwork for the simple side-step is exactly the same as the footwork for ninpo's most basic takedown, omote kote gyaku, and the first strike of hanbojutsu, do-uchi.

It seemed to me though that the whole sword scenerio was off somehow. Chris was doing these elaborate rolls to the side that

A. Took too much energy
B. Took too much time
C. Didn't create enough distance
D. Were completely unrealistic to say a "real word" scenerio

Obviously those rolls wouldn't work in a real situation or a fake one. All the instructor had to do was turn to his side practically. And then, in slow motion, he would show how he wraps the person up or slices their throat. All from a resisting target? Chris just laid there and did nothing while the instructor prepped his moves. I don't know much about Ninjitsu, but to me it just all seemed a little to fake or hoaky. I probably just *don't* understand the fundamentals like you do. So just take my opinion with a grain of salt.

*edit*

I had the same thought until I did it with a quality instructor. The training isnt full contact or anything, but it doesnt need to be. It takes a bit to "understand" whats goin on. Its still fun to do though, either way.
