I havent been to class in too long and would like to come back. My sensei teaches MMA with a healthy dose of traditional okinawan karate. That being said, are there any rules or customs that I should follow for my return? A couple of years ago a student from another dojo to train while in town and wore a length of rope for his belt. Is there some sort of protocol I need to follow or should I just show up and get ready to gert beat on a bit?

Just call ahead and say "hey- I'm coming back- is that cool?".

If they make you do any wierd shit just find a new place...

Did you leave on good terms? If not i'd call well ahead of time to make sure your welcome but if you left on good terms i'd just show up early for class and talk with sensei in person.
