Default all JKD practiceners

how do you all train........do you openly and honestly try to express yourself an find the techniques that work for YOU.....or do you simply do what your told by your instructors?....think about this before you answer an ask yourself......do i really practice "my style" of fighting what JKD is or am i just a robot caught in what JKD represents?

just somethin for you all to ponder........havent seen it asked before so i thought i'd ask

When I trained in JKD Concepts you noticed two tings. The beginners all looked the same in their training. they all used the same techniques and all fought is what looked like the same style. But, then you looked at the advanced students and they were nothing alike. You had all rounders, you had guys that would just go crazy and brawl, you had technical boxers, you had great kickers, grapplers, the list is endless.

Through the years of training, each student had become him/herself. They were now at a stage where they were competent enugh in the basics that they could express themselves in their performance.

I Agree with badboy, this is actually true for all martial arts, everyone understands what he is taught differently and likes to do things differently.

I'd say I practice my own way. I think I'm aided in having an instructor that encourages his students to do exactly that. He knows my background and I think he gets as much of a kick (if you'll pardon the pun) out of me incorporating something I've learned elsewhere as I do.

A while ago I got hold of a video of Kilindi Iyi's African martial arts. I liked the fluidity of it and I decided I wanted to get my techniques flowing in a similar manner. I took the tape along to my instructor, who watched it and he's been helping me do exactly that.

I think there's another plus in that a lot of my JKD lessons are private, so I'm not in a position where I feel I have to fit in with what the other students are doing or anything like that.

those are all great to hear.......i see all of you know exactly what JKD is about.......i leaning toward not even believing in traditional "classes" anymore.....all the instructors i can find want you to go into a room filled with tons of people and expect you to learn and express yourself and not conform when everone around you is immitating what they see the instructor doing.......do basically im down to reading and sparring as far as training goes now a days

Could you write something more about Kilindi Iyi?

badboy is right. i do my own style. i like to move in and out of sort to medium range. i also like to get in the clinch and use te knees. cause i liked doing that in MT. i also look for the grapple opertunity to shoot in. im an all rounder really. but bad boy is so right. the beginners all look to wooden in there movement. the advance guys, we always seem to move in our individual style.
