RELAX! RELAX! RELAX!

As for generic exercises: Head movement drills, floor to ceiling ball, skipping, running, practice advancing/retreating and sidestepping footwork. Regardless of your style these are things everyone can do.

Spar more, and with faster training partners. You will get faster. Also the drills mentioned above.

When you don't have a sparring partner.

Shadow box, shadow box and shadow box.

Have you tried sparring where one person is only allowed to be offense and the other can only do defense?

Its great to work on your defense this way because its your only choice! You can't counterpunch or anything.

Your defense will improve pretty quickly in this manner as long as your partner isn't whaling away on you full force, because then you'll be too stressed about not getting hurt to really learn anything.

In England we had a boxer called Herrol Graham. He used to spend many rounds in the ring with another boxer trying to hit him whilst he would use footwork to avoid him, with his arms held behind his back. His defensive skills were on a par with his extremely effective punching skills.
