Joey Gilberts competitive nature makes him a natural in his two jobs as boxer and attorney. Both vocations involve give and take scraps within their respective domains. Gilberts success in the sweet science has surprised some who believed he didnt have the stomach for the pros. But the 29-year old Nevada resident earned his stripes with his courageous effort against Peter Manfredo on NBC's Contender series.
After losing the first two rounds, Gilbert seemed on the verge of taking over when the Vitali-esque gash on his right eye forced the ref to go the cards after five. Gilbert dropped a questionable split decision, his only defeat in thirteen bouts. Since then, he's captured a minor 160-pound trinket under the tutelage of 2005 Trainer of the Year, Dan Birmingham. Kenneth Bouhairie caught up with Gilbert as he prepares to make his first defense on October 11th against Keith Sims.
