| Is my reach too short? I'm thinking of boxing/kick boxing but I seem to have short
arms compared to most boxers my height
(I'm 5'8.5 - 5'9. with a 5'7 arm span) is this too short for my height?
also, what weight class would you recommend for someone my height & reach? | | | | Senior Member Black Belt 5th Dan Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 2,324

| Yeah, totally too short. I'd give up on that idea mate. But you're in luck, I hear they need a motion capture model for the T-Rex in the next Jurassic Park flick.
Honestly man, don't worry about crap like that. If you want to take up kickboxing/boxing, take it up. If it doesn't work out, move on. If it does, great.

also, what weight class would you recommend for someone my height & reach? | Don't mean to ruin things here but the weight class has nothing to do with your reach or height...it's your weight, hence "weight class".
Also, just do what you want to do and make the best of it. Don't let it affect you. I wouldn't necessarily practice something that is 100% arms like boxing but I wouldn't let it force you into something you don't want to do. Try out different styles and see which one best suits you.

reach has everything to do with weight class.you wouldn't recommend someone with a 67 inch reach fight at 205 would you?
I don't think I'd be a great boxer but knowing how to use my hands is very important to me. | | | | Junior Member White Belt Join Date: May 2008 Posts: 16

| ok dude dont worry about reach if you are short you should concentrate on fighting inside. The opponenets reach get close with slipping and punish him when they try and get out of reach hit him with kicks and ya fight on your terms not theirs. | | | | Senior Member Black Belt 5th Dan Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 2,324

| It sounds to me like you're just looking for excuses not to start.

| Weight class definitely has more to do with it than just "weight".
Here are some averages to help you (boxing weight classes)
200+/Heavyweight : 6'3+
200/Cruiserweight: 6'2
175/Light Heavyweight: 6'1
168/Super Middleweight: 6'0
160/Middleweight: 5'11
154/Light Middleweight: 5'9
147/Welterweight 5'8
140/Light Welterweight: 5'7
135-130/Lightweight/Super Featherweight: 5'6
126/Featherweight: 5'5
Naturally there are plenty of exceptions, so don't let that stop you. | | | | Member Yellow Belt Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 57
