| Instructor and school gone. Help? I attend a place called Fairtex, or I should say I used to attend Fairtex. I went to go take class yesterday and I found out that it closed down! No one notified me or anything. Basically, Fairtex (at least the one I go to) has BJJ, Boxing, and Muay Thai. I was training in boxing under this guy named Paris. He was a great instructor. I know that before he went pro he won the Golden Gloves at least twice and later on he became the Cal St. and US Lightweight Champ. Anyway, nobody knows where he went and the Muay Thai guys went over to this place called Fitness West. Fitwess West has a ton of workout equip along with a boxing program. The main problem is that their boxing program focuses mainly on staying in shape as opposed to actual combat. I can't continue classes with my old instructor b/c I'm not sure where he is and I don't want to take the "boxing" classes available there (To me, it seems like Tae Bo). I don't know of any other boxing schools in the area (South San Francisco, Daly City, Colma, etc). As a last resort, I may have to switch over to Muay Thai. Even if I do switch, I would like to keep up the boxing somehow. Does anybody have any suggestions? It'd really be appreciated.
Edit:
The instructor for one of the boxing classes at Fitness West (one of the only ones I'm considering) is from the "Frisco Boxing Team". Info on this would be awesome. Thanks! | | | | Senior Member Black Belt 3rd Dan Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 1,779

| Your gym closed down out of the blue? Talk about odd, not to mention dodgy.
Anyway, good to hear you've found what sounds like a decent boxing instructor. You might want to approach him for private lessons, or find out where he trains and if you can train there as well. Meantime, why not do the Muay Thai anyway? Muay Thai in the west has a very strong emphasis on boxing skills these days and, as one often sees from K1 and international MT events, the good punchers tend to dominate. You won't develop the same consummate skill that dedicated boxing training would impart, of course, but you would get a much better all-round standup game in exchange, and your existing boxing skills would carry over well to Muay Thai. Just watch out for those leg kicks
Furthermore, if you do join the Muay Thai, you could always make some friends with whom you could get together outside of class time for extra training to refine your punching. If you can catch Umy or BadBoy about the forum, I'm sure they could give you ideas for drills and other training methods you could use to spice up your personal training.
In any case, all the best in your new gym.

| I have some focus mitts along with gloves and hand wraps. I also have a 90 pound bag (I think.. either that or its 120?). I know some basic drills from my previous instructor, but I'd like to learn more technique. As for the Muay Thai, it does sound good, but I wanted to refine my punches more before getting into it. Not sure whether or not I have a choice. | | | | Senior Member Black Belt 3rd Dan Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 1,779

| Well, I guess it's a bit of catch-22 there, eh? You want to refine your punching before getting into MT, but for now at least, it looks like you won't be able to do that until you at least get a few training partners, which means joining MT
IMHO, you should work both avenues - join the MT to get some kind of standup striking training (they won't be as good as pure boxers, but they can't possibly be that bad, no?) and, perhaps more importantly, make contacts who can be your training partners. Meantime, get on that boxing instructor's case and find out if he can train you and direct you to the gym where he trains. Once that option is open to you, you can always cut back on the MT to do more boxing, if you like. Who knows, if that instructor introduces you to his gym, you just might run into your old coach there - it's such a small world sometimes

| Hey bro, if you have a look around in my boxing Q&A I think I have written an article on home training, my exams, fasting and other things sometimes got in the way of me and the gym but I kept my skills up at home, as long as you understand common faults and have someone who used to train with you to watch you every so often to pick faults you should still keep fairly good.
If its possible try and get some lads you train with together ever week of whenever possible for sparring, just tell them that even 15 minutes of their time will help you.
James has got the right idea, id follow his advice and just keep looking around for training oppertunities, try and keep in contact with your instructor so when hes free and if he has the time he can check up on you to see how your doing. | | | | Senior Member Black Belt 3rd Dan Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 1,779

Oh, and, er, I didn't really notice until I opened the thread just now, but Angel's not a bro per se, if you get my meaning
Anyway, Angel, Umy's the man to go to for boxing-specific advice on this forum
