| I study HKD and TKD right now. Not for long, so I would never try to pass myself off as any kind of expert or authority on the subject. I studied Muay Thai for a bit before that and still consider that my "base" art.
I like TKD, I don't think its a "bad" art as some state, however I still believe MT to be the superior striking art since its closer to being complete.
I'm currently a yellow belt in HKD and I'm enjoying it a lot. A very comprehensive art, it at least touches on just about every range of combat you could find yourself in.
Bushidoka, do you study HKD? How long? | | | | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 135

| Hey 8limbs. How ya doin'?
Yeah, i am HKD. Forever it seems. About 16 years now. Karate, judo and tkd before that, but I haven't retained much of the karate or tkd. I still work out at the judo club here and there, maybe 15 times a year. We do a ton of throws in HKD, but judo uses a more brutish type of throw. It's good to have the cross training.
You are just learning to lead an opponents momentum now? Orange belt is when the fun starts. You start to see the continous, flowing motion of HKD, and the power generated from the circle.
Never done MT, but it does have nice knee and elbow strikes for sure! | | | | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 2,165

| My instructor uses the same belt system as he uses for his TKD class, so there isn't an Orange belt...what "kup" is Orange belt? At my school it goes white-yellow-green-blue-red-black.
Well its great to have you on the forum. With 16 years experience in the art you will no doubt prove to be a great resource on the forum.
We've been learning breakfalls (of course), wristlocks, jointlocks, some limited blending with momentum, and striking. I'm really looking forward to the throwing aspect of the art.
I've always wanted to crosstrain in Judo. I really like that art. | | | | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 135

| You are taking tkd and hkd in the same gym?
This is quite a clash in styles. TKD is liner, while HKD is circular. TKD hard, HKD soft. They don't quite compliment each other. There is quite a bit of friction between the two styles, mostly politics of course. There is talk in korea of forming one umbrella federation reigning over all the korean styles, but I can not see it happening. Too much jealousy and bad feelings. I am not convinced it is for the best anyways.
Our belt system is the same, except for the fact that we have an orange belt. No stripes though like TKD. Ours are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, red, black. Then we have what is called a grey belt. This is when the black belt has become faded with age, a most respected practitioner.
And yes, HKD has beautiful throws. We make the judoka green with envy

| Well, my main love as far as striking goes is Muay Thai. But I have found useful aspects in TKD, and the competition aspect sounds like a lot of fun. I'll probably be competing at the first opportunity I get.
While the arts TKD and HKD may be polar opposites in many respects, I believe crosstraining is a good thing, and as long as the two arts don't confuse you it all adds up to more tools in the toolbox.
If I run into any questions I'll be sure to ask you. And once again, welcome to the board. | | | | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 13

It is a wonderful art, my dojo also teaches TKD, our grandmaster is a 7th in TKD and 6th in HKD. I love it. | | | | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 1970 Posts: 5,579

Sorry, I dont know who I dodnt see it before.
I study moust in Japanese martial arts. Unfortunatly I dont have much experience in Korean martial arts. All I know about HKD is from people from HKD that practiced with me. Same is with TKD (WTF and ITF)...
