Default Training in Shaolin Kung fu

Hi I am a student at Carleton university in Ottawa, Canada. They offer this shaolin kung-fu there. Here is the description:

This ancient Chinese art incorporates the unique and sophisticated techniques from Chinese Kempo, Praying Mantis and Tiger/ Crane Kung Fu into a dynamic system of empty hand self defense. It is based on the scientific laws and disciplines of physics, leverage and kinesiology. The objective is to better yourself through the sharpening of both mind and body.

So what do you guys think? They offer it 2 times a week for a 10 week period. Then 2 more 10 week periods follow. Oh and just to let you know I have very little experience in kung fu but i am moderately flexible.

lol yeah buddy.

Shaolin is a great art. I personally love it. I would reccomend getting a taste of it to see if you like it. I would also reccomend that if you find you enjoy practicing in it, you find yourself a good school to enroll in. Use what your University is offering as a means to get your feet wet. Bamboo is a great resourse. Ask him to reccomend some reputable schools in the Ottawa region.

P.S. I too welcome you to FA.com

If it's a university club, beware of a more wu shu style of kung fu with lots of flowery movements and an emphasis on forms, since most schools frown on full-contact fighting (hence the almost non-existance of boxing teams). It's still possible to find a good club at a school, but it's somewhat unlikely (at least in the US; I don't know about Canada).

Whoa! It's Wutan? And this guy has trained under Su Yuzhang?! What're you waiting for?! JOIN!!!

Seriously, Wutan is reputable and provides good instruction, but be sure to butter up...er...talk to your instructor from the get-go and make clear your aims so you wind up training in the right direction. Glad to hear you've found a good school. Go for it!

I have heard only good things about this group. One thing is that like any university club, they have a high turnover, so its important to to train with the head teacher as much as possible as it could be all new students next year.

Welcome to FA and if your new to Ottawa, welcome! Its a great city.
