Default QiGong

What are the basics of it and how does one go about learning how to control it?

IMO this isn't really something you can learn on your own. There are several subtleties in the hand positions, movements, etc., and doing it wrong (even if only a little bit) can have a negative effect rather than a positive one. My suggestion would be to find a Tai Chi instructor in your area and have them teach it to you.

Exactly. Qigong (chi gong) is an excellent way to keep your physical, mental and spiritual self healthy. Learning it straight from a book or video is not only difficult but iffy (like Gong said.) A good Taiji Master will be able to quide you properly and ensure you have proper form and posture. He will also be able to teach you how to breathe properly. Not only that but he will be able to correct all the mistakes and bad habits you WILL develope.

The question is, why do you want to learn qigong? What specific benefits are you looking for from it, and are there other things out there that may better achieve those specifics?

Look up "michael Babin" here in Ottawa. He practices Yang style tai chi at 195 bank st. and is very good and highly regarded in the serious MA community of ottawa.
