Default shaolin monks

I have always wondered but never bothered asking anyone, what are the 8 dots on a monks head supposed to mean? I have done my fare share of searching but found nothing ^_^

I think each dot signifies a vow.

I would suggest that different sects have very different practices though.

The dots on the head are representative of a true monk's progression in understanding the Chan Buddhism that is studied by the monks. One of my three masters is an American who grew up in a temple over there and had dots on his head when he returned. It is a sign of knowledge, but not a kung fu rank...lol.
