Default Bagua Question: Old Forum Topic

Bagua Question

8LimbsScientist
Ok, I heard something from someone recently about Bagua, and it doesn't quite sound right to me, but I might be wrong. Keep in mind I know very little about this style.

Someone told me that the animal styles of Bagua include Unicorn, Bear and Lion.

This doesn't sound right to me for some reason. Do these animal styles exist in Bagua or not?

Lions are second only to dragons in chinese mythology, design, decoration and culture. Here is a link for little background. Unicorns in China are called Qilin, they play a large role in chinese mythology.

Maybe its because its early in the moring and I have yet to have coffee yet, but even as a recent member of the board I cannot understand the incredible amount of arrogance people have posting information they have no idea about. If you don't know then don't post. If you "believe" something then look it up before you post it to be sure.

You will find reference to both lion and unicorn forms on the above sight, hope this helps.

lol, well all of you were talking about internal arts and I figured instead of arguing about it all the time, I'll give it a try.

So I met up with this guy who teaches Bagua out of his garage. He wasn't charging anything and his name was recommended on the emptyflower forum. He started giving me an introduction to the different forms and thats where I heard about the lion, bear and unicorn form.

Anyway, I only went twice and stopped going. I just wasn't comfortable. First of all it was pretty far, and we were mainly getting together early in the morning on the weekends. This sucked because I don't get any sleep during the week, so I need to sleep in on weekends.

But the main reasons I stopped going was:

1. He was disdainful of any kind of external muscular strength and was kind of hinting that I should stop working out. He kept saying things like I'd be more flexible if I had less muscle and saying I was "muscle-bound." I'm 155 lbs...exactly how much skinnier did he want me to be? I could never stop lifting weights...its a part of my life at this point.

2. He told me I would have to give up on MT in order to be able to use Bagua. I love MT and I don't think I would be able to give up my external arts altogether just so I could learn an Internal art.

Thats really too bad that he told you that you should stop MT to practice an internal art. Sounds like he may be slightly insecure.

Aikido is an internal art but is complimented by external arts, in fact, it is often recomended that you practice another art before taking on aikido as aikido technique assumes a trained attacker that understands striking and martial response. No understanding of external arts would in my opinion hamper your ability to defend yourself using a soft or internal art.

Yes these are three of the eight animal forms, in fact I am learning Lion and Unicorn (which is also know as Giraffe) right now.
