Default heavy bag

-The heavy bag, my instructor doesn't mind us using wraps and gloves
although he does think using them can make you reliant on them when your in real fight,
so I'm not bringing up a real big topic here, just to say I agree with him-to a point.

any comments?

I really don't agree with that. How exactly does it make you reliant on them?

I think this is really the same as ive put in my boxing thread and others, I dont think you will feel the difference with wraps, maybe a slight change with gloves (depending on size, bag mitts - 14 ounce quite a difference )

Overall I dont think the change will be that big from gloves to non gloves depending on the individual.

Its discussed a lot in this thread on bareknuckle boxing and I have very briefly touched it in my boxing Q&A:

I agree with your instructor, I dont train in Muai, but I did do some boxing. I never used to tape, (too laze TBH) and I still dont. IMO taping is not so great. You build your wrists and knuckles better without taping. Taping is however good so that you dont bloody up your knuckles and the bag, thus making you able to punch more than you would otherwise. But me personally I dont tape and dont wear gloves on the bag.

going without the does condition your hands a bit but so does wearing them. I personally belive u have one pair of hands so look after them. wear wraps atleast.

asag
-Being 'reliant' on gloves and wraps is that your hands become
used to the padding around them, and when you get into a fight you have no
padding. And so, theorectically a person might become more tenative without
the extra padding.

the reason I dont like the wraps is because I like the hard skin on the knuckles. Unlike badboy I am not a hand modell look after your hands, what are you a noxema girl too? JK bro you know that.

-If your going to go bare knuckles on the heavy bag
it'll make you aware of hand position that's for sure.
(Ouch!..was that my wrist!?)

yes you can BREAK your wrists if you do not practice proper punching. make sure your fists are straight and the top of your fists lined up with your forearm. If I am describing it right. I really have to show you what I mean. Basically make it like a small version of a battering ram.

I still don't feel that wearing gloves or wraps will make you become reliant. Like badboy said you need to take care of your hands. Also, it is true that your hands do develope a certain amount of conditioning even with gloves and wraps.
