Default How do I prepare myself for Special Forces Training?

I have two yrs before I go for it. I am able to take it physically, but I need to work on my mental ability to take it, so that I won't quite. So, is there anything I can do to strength my mental ability?

You've gotta take guns apart and clean them and put them back together. You gotta drink strange foreign beers. You have'ta be able to run and shoot guns at the same time while hungover. You need to practice lying on an ant pile and don't move or fart for an hour. And swimming will help too. And you have to have muscles on your muscles. You hafta have muscles on your eyeballs.

just think of things that could mentally challenge yourself. I do believe they sit you in a dark dark room and you can't fall asleep. Now what you do before that I don't know? I imagine your dead tired already as it is, and they have cameras in there watching you. So that could be one thing, stuff like that. Put yourself in a situation you don't want to be in.

A little more background from you would help us to answer this question. If it's the Army SF, then you've got to go through Selection, then it's off to the Q course, language school and all that.

Selection is about 3 weeks, and then the Q course and all that stuff could take you two years. If you're in a combat MOS, you should be more than mentally tough enough to do the job, and you'd better bust your butt to get in the physical shape you need to be in, b/c it is a smoker.

As for strengthening your mental ability, either it's in you, or it's not. However, it is a team-based job. I'm very familiar with the program because of my time in the 82nd at Ft. Bragg. Although I was not interested in going SF, I know several people who attempted Selection and washed out, 1 with a knee injury, others with heat injuries, and some who just couldn't make the cut. You must be proficient in infantry training, but more than that, Selection is simply the "smoker" of a lifetime. Ask your SF Recruiter for a SF Fitness handbook, it will tell you how to train your body for SF, b/c it's more than just being able to do pushups and run.

IF they can stand you, try and talk to or get in contact with SF vets or any other service member with experience. Listen to every detail they have to say and learn from it. Also always be determined, focused and a hardworker in EVERYTHING you do, school, work, etc NEVER slack off or do anything half-assed. That'll help you to build the mindset that you would need for any type of SOF training. Good luck.

If you know what they are going to do to you and why they are doing it and convince yourself that its for your best interest... In my opinion, you'll stand a good chance of making it.

Go at it with the attitude that you'll take whatever they throw at you and prepare for what you own body and mind will start throwing at you. Borderline starvation and fatigue is the 2 key things you will deal with. You must be able to think and act clearly or at least, clear enough to get done what they are telling you.
Go for it! I wish you well.
