I had a private lesson again with Luigi last night. It was a great lesson, we reviewed some of my problem areas in seated or butterfly guard. When I just have one hook or one foot on my opponent and I’m seated, I have been getting passed very easily. One of the key points was to keep my foot as a hook in the crook of his knee. In my best Brazilian accent - “Monkey Paws, not pudding foot”.
I was having a tendency to put my foot just on the hip, which allowed my opponent to move around and pass very easily. Just putting my foot in the crook, changed a lot of things. I played with this later during a great rolling session and I instantly felt improvement.
Tips for seated and butterfly guard
- Hook their knee and control them with your monkey pawed foot. Keep a “live” foot.
- Control them with an over or underhook if possible. If you can’t work back to butterfly guard with both feet hooked and sleeve control
- Be on your hip and side. If no-gi, skip your butt out a little bit more
Gi Technique series for sweeping in seated guard
- Seated guard sweep with underhook and wrist control
- hook under the knee with your hoot (assuming left foot)
- Tip to the side of your seated knee or the side you have wrist control on (right)
- Elevate your hooked foot (left), drive with your underhooked arm (left), and pull with your wrist control (right)
- When sweeping, dig and drive with the ball of your (right) foot to get the over.

- Opponent stands when you have seated guard variation #1
- If you opponent steps up to you, grab your opponents ankle of the leg he stepped up with. (assuming his left foot, my right hand)
- Move my right foot to his left hip
- Pull with my right hand, push with my right foot. My left foot is still hooked and controlled.
- Sweep.
- Opponent stands when you have seated guard variation #2
- If you opponent steps up to you, swim underneath his leg and foot.(assuming his left foot, my right hand)
- Pull his body and weight on top of you
- Drive to your left trapping his right leg with your other hand and sweep.
- If he does not get swept, push his body away at his hip level and go for a heel hook.
Frustrating Guard Pass used against Luigi in the Worlds
- Take my right hand, move it to his left armpit area, my right hand.
- Grab the gi in that area, make it tight, and drive it up into him, so he can’t have use of that arm.
- Stretch yourself out, and force your body back.
- Grab with your left hand his right gi pant near his ankle and lower calf. Grab on the outside of his gi pant.
- Break your hips, so you are on your right hip.
- Force his right leg down with the gi control, and step over your left leg.
- VERY IMPORTANT: trap his ankle of the leg you just passed with your right instep. I have been trying to pass the guard without this. I guess this is a big big big error.
- Keep the control on the leg, and put BIG pressure down on him with your right shoulder.
- Missing a thought…. he gave me another detail here (I forgot notebook). But basically you keep control with the hand, pressure him, and transition to side.
No-Gi Seated Guard to Triangle Choke
- You have an underhook in seated guard, but your opponent pummels and tries to get an underook
- As he does this, you take control with an overhook
- Also, as he does this, take the other arm (my right, his left) that you have wrist control on and feed it quickly to your overhooked hand so you are hooking his crossed arm on his tricep. You should have control of both arms.
- For this technique, you are forcing the hand you are crossing to go between your legs.
- From here, sit back, and put your right leg over his shoulder and body to start setting up the triangle.
- Get into the triangle position and then bump your hips to bring across the other arm.
- Finish the triangle choke.
Notes: I really liked this setup and finish. There was amazing control with you had the overhook with both arms trapped. The only slight difficulty I was facing was bringing his posted arm across. But after asking Luigi, you have to do this, when you are being pummeled. So it all has to happen at once.
No-Gi seated guard to taking the person’s back
- Refer to steps 1-3 of previous technique
- Instead of taking his arm and putting it between your legs, take the arm and pull it across your body, so you are still going to end up controlling both of his arms.
- From here, it’s easy. Push their head and body with your free arm (right) down.
- You left foot is already inside of their body hooked. Drive this foot in-between their legs, and transition to their back
Notes: Again, I really this setup for attacking. Very dominant and powerful position. I need get some video on this.
I also got a new Koral Gi. Nice gi, but a little toooo big and pre-shrunk. Going to have to get it altered.
